Mandated by Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution, a census of U.S. households has been conducted every ten years since 1790.  Between March 12th and March 20th, the U.S. Census Bureau will mail invitations to respond to the census to more than 140 million households across the country.  For the first time, however, in addition to returning the questionnaire by mail or answering the questions over the phone, you will have the option of completing the Census online.

Count Everyone Once.  Only Once.  And in the Right Place.

The goal of the U.S. census is to collect an accurate count of the number of individuals at each address on Census Day, April 1, 2020.  Why is an accurate count so important?  Here are some of the ways that U.S. Census data impact you, either directly or indirectly:

  • It determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • It defines congressional and state legislative districts, school districts and voting precincts
  • It determines the allocation of $675 billion dollars in federal funding to the states, including: Medicaid, SNAP, state highway aid, Section 8 housing, special education grants, S-CHIP, Title I grants, National School Lunch Program, WIC, Head Start, Foster Care, Health Center programs
  • It provides important insights for companies making decisions about where to establish or expand operations, which can mean fresh opportunities to boost local economies

For Vermonters, the stakes are high.  George Washington University’s GW Institute of Public Policy estimates that, in 2016 alone, some $2,482,076,315 in funding flowed to Vermont via 55 large federal spending programs.  Whether you know it or not, you, your family and your friends’ families likely benefit in some way from the money distributed through these programs.  Simply put, not getting an accurate population count jeopardizes federal support for Vermont and the residents of Addison County!

Please participate in the 2020 Census!

The 2020 Decennial Census is available now online at my2020census.gov.  The questionnaire comprises just seven questions (to be answered for each family member) and takes less than 10 minutes to complete.  With so much at stake for Vermonters, every reponse counts!
