Ways to Go
We think the journey is as important as the destination. Arrive at your destination feeling awake and alert after walking or biking; or relaxed and worry-free after a bus ride or carpool. Enjoy the journey and enjoy the world.
Bus
Middlebury is the central hub in a stellar network of bus routes. The ACTR (pronounced "actor") bus system is more convenient than you may think, and in-town fares are free. ACTR buses and connecting services reach Bristol, Vergennes, Brandon, Burlington and Rutland. Whether you need to travel to a neighboring town or to New York City, hop on an ACTR bus to start your journey. Explore the routes at actr-vt.org, and take a ride to see for yourself.
Bike
Exercise your muscles and enjoy your senses by biking to work, school, or shops. Join your kids for Walk and Roll to School Days. Check our calendar for bike safety and repair workshops, or talk to the experts at our local bike shops downtown. More bike racks have been installed around town for convenient bike parking. If you're a bit hesitant, start small with short trips around town to get more comfortable. To promote safe travel for everyone, Middlebury has painted stencils on roads leading into town to remind all commuters to share the road.
Walk
Middlebury's compact center, our growing system of winter-plowed sidewalks, and an abundance of well-defined crosswalks encourages light and easy travel by foot. Walking in Middlebury can certainly be a year-round activity. It's a great way to stay active in winter, and it's absolutely beautiful in the warmer seasons. With wide downtown sidewalks and a courteous driving community, walking to your destination is a safe and energizing option. Join your kids for Walk and Roll to School Wednesdays. Grab your reusable bag and walk to the grocery store for lighter shopping trips. Seeing Middlebury by foot is a beautiful thing.
